Drums are often created at a sacred point in the year - see info for each indvidual drum.
Eurpoean deer and English goat are used for the skins with the frames being ash, birch, beech, willow or oak.
The handle is created using a unique (to the uk, as far as I know!) willow 'heart'. This is woven to bring in the elements of the Four Directions. Hemp rope then holds the drum firmly together to create a deep resonant sound.
Willow brings the following qualities:
Balance, learning, growth, harmony, connection to the moon and water, psychic abilities, the goddess and all that is feminine.
The Celts understood that willow is instrumental in bringing about psychic visions that produced a clearer understanding of the world in which they lived.
Willow channels earth energy and is used as the frame for traditional Native American sweat lodges because it contains salicin which is converted to salicylic acid in the body, which we now get from aspirin.
The willow heart/handle on your drum has been woven from 4 pieces, bringing in the energy of the Four Directions with each piece.
With this style of handle you don't need to grip it tightly, it will gently sit in the palm of your hand with the last knuckle of your fingers lightly curled around it.... or if you wish, I can add a cross of rope in the centre to give you more holding options - please ask for this to be included.

The Ash tree has always been seen as mystical, frequently being associated with healing and enchantment. In Celtic literature, there are many references to the Ash tree, but in particular, it is associated with the Welsh Magician-God Gwyddion, who bears an Ash staff/wand, a symbol of healing and especially transformation and empowerment in matters of destiny.
Ash symbolises the World Tree, which spans between worlds vertically from the waters of Annwn (the lower world), Abred (this world), Gwynvid (Upperworld) and finally into Ceugant.
It symbolises the Cosmic Axis of the universe, as the central column or conduit spanning through the many levels of realms and realities. It can be seen as the spine or backbone of the universe, or the central column of the tree of life, with many branches leading into the upperwordly realms and many roots in the lower worlds.
Symbolically, it is interesting to consider our own incarnations as individual leaves upon this tree – the leaf that falls and returns to the roots to nourish the tree, in terms of the cycles of death and rebirth. [Information on Ash from Druidry.org website]
